Virginia Statewide Trauma Registry (VSTR)
Description
Data are from all Virginia hospitals that provide emergency services. Information reported is of any injured person who requires admission to the hospital, requires transfer to another acute care hospital for their injury, or dies in the hospital prior to admission.
How the Community can use the Data
The Virginia Statewide Trauma Registry (VSTR) helps communities understand serious injury trends across the state. Public health officials, hospitals, and emergency services can use the data to plan prevention efforts and improve care. Community organizations may use it to guide programs or apply for funding, while researchers can study injury causes and outcomes. Local leaders and the public can use the data to stay informed and support safety initiatives.
Data Limitations
The VSTR only includes serious injuries that result in hospital admission, transfer, or death, so less severe cases are not captured. Details about how injuries occurred may be limited, and reporting practices can vary by hospital. The data may not reflect real-time events, and some details may be removed or grouped to protect privacy, which can limit analysis for small groups or areas.
