Virginia Youth Survey (VYS)
Description
VYS, Virginia’s version of the CDC-based Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The survey is administered every odd year in randomly selected Virginia public schools.
How the Community can use the Data
The VYS data helps schools, community organizations, public health professionals, and policymakers better understand the health behaviors and challenges faced by Virginia’s youth. By using this data, communities can identify areas of concern, develop targeted prevention and intervention programs, support youth mental health and wellness initiatives, and inform policies that promote healthier, safer environments for young people across the Commonwealth.
Data Limitations
The survey relies on self-reported data, which may be affected by students' honesty, understanding of the questions, or recall accuracy. Participation is voluntary, and not all schools or students may take part, which can impact the representativeness of the results. Additionally, the survey captures a snapshot in time and may not reflect changes in behavior or experiences over time.
