The dashboards below highlight key data on service members and veterans across Virginia. They provide insight into demographic characteristics as well as important aspects of lived experience, including: employment, incarceration, median household income, poverty, homelessness, health risk factors, and behaviors. These population-specific dashboards are designed to support policymakters, program developers, community members, and more in understanding and addressing the needs of service members, veterans, and their families.
Note: The data currently available on the dashboard only reflects those who have previously served in the United States armed forces. Furture data additions will include information on those currently serving in the military and their family members.
Veteran Population Estimates
This interactive dashboard provides a comprehensive look at Virginia’s veteran population. It presents data from the U.S. Census Bureau spanning the past ten years, including:
Overall veteran population size
Population trends over time
Demographic profiles by age, sex, race, ethnicity, and other factors

Veteran Living Conditions
The Living Conditions dashboard explores the experiences of service members and veterans in Virginia and, in some instances, nationwide. It includes data on:
Employment Status
Incarceration
Median Household Income
Poverty Status
Unhoused Status
The incarceration and unhoused status pages allow direct comparisons between Virginia’s veteran population, national averages, and other states, providing valuable context for policy and program development. Although varying between the different pages, data can be viewed by demographic groups and, in some cases, compared between veteran and non-veteran populations.

Veteran Health Risk Factors and Behaviors
This dashboard uses data from the CDC’s Behaviora Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) to highlight key health risks and behaviors among veterans. Topics include, but are not limited to:

General and Mental Health
Social Support
Tobacco Usage and Vaping
Dashboard users can filter results by veteran demographic sub-groups and compare veteran outcomes with those of the non-veteran population.
