Description
BRFSS is a telephone survey conducted by the health departments of all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam with assistance from CDC. BRFSS is the primary source of information for states and the nation on the health-related behaviors of adults. States collect data through monthly interviews with adults aged 18 years or older. BRFSS interviewers ask questions related to behaviors that are associated with preventable chronic diseases, injuries, and infectious diseases.
How the Community can use the Data
The BRFSS data helps public health professionals, community organizations, policymakers, and researchers understand the health behaviors and needs of adults in Virginia. Communities can use this data to identify health trends, develop targeted interventions, support chronic disease prevention efforts, and inform policies that promote healthier lifestyles and improve access to healthcare services. The survey results guide initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall health and well-being of adults across the Commonwealth.
Data Limitations
The survey relies on self-reported information, which can be affected by participants’ memory, understanding of questions, or willingness to disclose personal information. Participation is voluntary, and not all demographic groups may be equally represented, which can impact the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, the data reflects a specific point in time and may not capture seasonal or long-term health trends.
